TAKE A BREATH TAKE IT DEEP CALM YOURSELF HE SAYS TO ME It was one year today, that he had died. August thirteenth, 2009 had been the day that he shallow breathing had ended, and his family had cried over his dead body, growing cold under the white sheets of the hospital bed. October let his fingers stray to his forehead, where a scar from the deadly rock that had ended his life would be until the day he crossed the bridge. He didn't think he would ever summon the courage to walk across that bridge that led to whatever was beyond. He would remain on Earth forever, wandering as a ghost. Forever seventeen, with dyed black hair and darkened eyes of sadness. He would never get to see his family again, or his friends. Not that he would want to see his friends. It was their idea to dive off the cliff in the first place. It was thanks to their peer pressure that he was dead right now.
October knew he probably looked really weird right now. He was sitting in the middle of the river, holding his head in his hands. Water wouldn't really bother him, because it didn't cling to him like it had when he was human. When he would stand up and leave the water, he would be completely dry. The water just passes him by, like he was't even there. He missed the feeling of water dripping from his hair onto his shirt. Just like he missed everything else from when he was human. It was weird, that he felt so connected to water, when it had brought his end.
BOY DROWNED AFTER BEING KNOCKED UNCONCIOUS FROM ROCK. He remembered the articles from the newspapers he had seen when he returned to his hometown as a ghost. The newspaper had been what explained what happened to him. He didn't remember what had happened at all. The newspaper had explained that he dove off the cliff, to his his head against a sharp rock under the water. He had drowned because not one person jumped in to save him. Not even one of his "friends." October hated life as a ghost. If he wasn't so afraid of what would happen to him after he crossed the bridge. If heaven and hell existed, he would be sent to hell for his sins. He didn't want that to happen to him.

Willa had awoken early today, it was friday the thirteenth, luckily for Willa she wasn't one of the few who believed in the superstition. She believed that if she didn't believe in it then nothing bad would happen to her, and so far it had worked. Today was the last day of her week with her mother, the upcoming one she would be moving in with her father for the next week. It was a routine that the young girl had come accustomed to over the past seven years. The young girl never needed to worry about packing and such, because she had enough at both parents houses to live there full time. Willa took her time getting ready, all she was really going to do today was spend a few hours with her mother before she headed over to her dads house. They both worked, though they each took every other Friday off so they could spend a couple hours with their daughter before she went to the other parents house to live for the next week.
Willa spent a whole two hours getting ready, she didn't usually take this long, but she was procrastinating. The young girl believed that it was just because she was a teenager, but she didn't really want to spend a whole half a day with her mother or father. When she was finished she went to the kitchen and helped her mother cook breakfast, Willa was a good cook, she always ended up cooking for her father when she was over at his house because he couldn't make a decent meal so it was either he cooking or take out. When breakfast was ready the two girls, mother and daughter, sat at the small table and discussed what they would do today as they ate. They had finally decided to go to a movie, they both had the same taste so it didn't take long to decide which movie.
the movie theater was dark and cold, but the movie was good enough for Willa not to care. She endured the three hours with her mother, glad that they didn't have to talk much. The girl loved her parents, but sometimes she wished she could be a normal teenager on the island, even though there was no normal to the girl understanding. When the movie ended, Willa jumped up stretching. It was finally time to leave. Her mother drove her to her house and they said there goodbyes. Willa rushed out the door and took her time to her fathers house, it was a beautiful day and she was going to enjoy it, besides her father wasn't due home for a couple of hours anyways.
Willa made her way to the starting of a small river that ran through the town, Cooper River. As she neared it she saw a boy sitting in the water. She watched him silently as he sat there, wondering why he would be sitting in the water. Willa walked over to the edge and asked What are you doing way out there? It was odd to see anyone in the river, since the day that boy died here. She hadn't known him, though she had heard of him and of course they had gone to the same schools growing up. She thought it was weird that she had never met him even though they lived on such a small island together.

TAKE A BREATH TAKE IT DEEP CALM YOURSELF HE SAYS TO ME October had fallen into another memory of when he was alive, so he didn't notice when he was joined by another. So he jumped, suprirsed and caught off guard when he heard her question. He didn't answer right away, because he was exhaling deeply, calming himself before turning to casually, or at last as casually as he could after being surprised like that. He studied the girl that was looking at him, taking in her appearance as well as her mannerisms. It was obvious she was a human, which meant that his explanation would clearly have to be a lie. And a good one too, because humans didn't hang out at the river anymore. not since the death. His death, of course. He had scared them away from a beautiful place. That was rather depressing. It made him feel guilty.
October shook his head quickly This wasn't a time to get caught in his thoughts again, he wasn't alone any longer. What could he say that would make sense? He was new to the place, and didn't know the terrible story? But that wouldn;t explain wy he was sitting in the middle of the river. That wasn't exactly normal. And he didn't want her thinking she was talking to a lunatic, because she was rather pretty. When he had been alive, blonde hair hd been his favourite. And it suited this girl, with her petite frame and striking eyes. He didn't feel a tug of familiarity, which meant that he probably hadn't known her when he was living. That was good. She wouldn't recognize him, as long as she didn't watch the news too often. In case she did, he would have to come up with a lie that would explain why he looked like the kid that died in this river. Sibling? That could work. It would explain why he was here too. It was the year anniversary of his brother's death, and he was paying his repects here rather than at the gravestone that had been set in the cemetary for him.
"I'm paying my respects." he answered simply, and then he realized that there was a possibility that she didn't know what had happened here. "A year ago, my broter drowned in this river. I don't know why I came here rather than the cemetary. I guess it's because this is his actual grave...I feel closer to him here." he winced. Talking about his own death felt pretty shitty. But it was true. He felt closer to himself in the river, like he was complete. Maybe it was because he had always come there as a kid growing up on the island. Or maybe because it was the last place he was alive.

Willa watched the boy as he sat in the middle of the river. Most people would think she was a weirdo for even being around the lake after the death, but this boy he was actually sitting inside of the lake! That would be considered pure freak! Willa wasn’t the type of girl to be consumed with how people thought about her. Sure she cared what people thought of her, but being thought of as weird wouldn’t be a preference of hers. Now that she thought about it, she knew it would be bad of the somewhat good reputation she had at school, and that wasn’t good.
The young girl looked at the boy carefully as he stood up. Something was odd about the way he looked; he wasn’t dripping, like she imagined anyone would be. No, in fact, he seemed to be rather dry. Being one of the few that knew about the humans, Willa wasn’t as weirded out by the sight as any other person would be. Getting past that, she looked more at his appearance. He was rather cute, but oddly familiar. Not in the sense that she had met him before, because she knew she hadn’t, but more like she had seen him. Living o such a small island like this it wasn’t an odd kind of familiarity, but this was different, kind of like how famous people are familiar to you. You hear about them for a while and see them a lot on television and in the news or magazines.
Willa thought about his response. She couldn’t recall hearing about siblings, though she didn’t know the family, so who was she to say? She guessed she would go along with it, thogh the part of her that always gave er a feeling that someone was something other than what they sad was growing stronger the more words that came out of his mouth. She didn’t know who he was exactly yet. Oh, That make perfect sense. She smiled at him and stood there not really knowing what to say. It was an awkward silence coming on and she knew it.

TAKE A BREATH TAKE IT DEEP CALM YOURSELF HE SAYS TO ME When he stood up, October wished and wished for his jeans to drip. Not only would it make him feel more human, but it would keep the girl from suspecting something was up. He wondered if she was one of the humans that knew about the creatures that lived on this island, but it was probably best not to mention it. In case she wasn't one of the humans that knew. Then she would most likely pry and find out. He wasn't the best liar. He had never been able to lie well. Now, it was a little easier because he had to do it often. He walked out of the river, and stopped right where the dirt and water met, close to the girl, but not close enough to mak the situation more awkward than it already was. He could tell she was still wondering about him. He would too, if he was her. He didn't seem like a person to trust.
October forced a smile onto his face. This was the first human contact he had had for the past few months. He had to thread carefully on human land, because his parents still lived in the same little house that they had owned since before he was born. Running into them could be a huge problem, because they didn't know about the supernatural species on this island. He had talked with some of the other creatures, other ghosts, and some vampires, but they weren't the same as geniuine humans. Humans were much happier, and purer. More innocent. He liked talking to them, because he could believe what they were telling him. Not to mention that they made him feel like he still had a heart beating in his chest. He shook his head, thinking happy thoughts. He ran a few slender fingers through his hair, which was black. He missed his brown hair, but it was gone forever. He felt like he looked depressed with the darker tone of hair. He would have to deal with it though. A lot of the ghosts had said it made him look sexy. But he didn't believe it, not for a minute. He had never been attractive, he had been a kid that just blended into the crowd. "Does it? Good. I was beginning to think I was a perfect lunatic"
October smiled at the girl. Back when he was alive, he would have been flirting like crazy with her. He had never been too good with girls, but he had never been able to handle not talking to the ones that really caught his eye. Now though, he knew it was best to keep his distance. Friends were fine, but anything tooclose would threaten the secrecy of the species living on the island. Sometimes when that secrecy was broken, bad things happened. There had been vampire hunts before, because of it. The poor vampires had been terrified for months. It had been a bad battle, according to the history books. "I'm October Pierce." he said, figuring that introducing himself wuld be fine. October hadn't been his name when he was alive of course, it had been Phoenix, which he passed as his middle name now. October had been picked as a new name because he had like the way it fit with Pierce. Luckily, it was a common enough last name that he could keep it. "Nice to meet you."

Willa smiled as the boy came closer to her. It would be perfect timing for her to find our if her was human or not, usually though when she encountered the creatures they would attack her, but he didn't seem to want too. She looked him up and down again, now that he was closer she could see him better. He was a very cute boy, but he had a sad look in his eyes, like he knew something that would make others cry. It wasn't something the girl liked to see so she mover her gaze and examined the other features of his face. October wasn't the guy Willa would find herself automatically attracted too, she would think he was cute or okay, but she would never crush on him.
Moving past looks, Willa was planning on working getting to know the "new guy", she liked being the first to introduce people who had just moved to the island. It wasn't every day the island got new comers, so every time someone moved in they were usually something the whole island tried to get a piece of. Everyone here knew everyones business, well other than the humans who knew nothing about the creatures. Sometimes Willa hated being one of the only ones, especially since she knew no other people that knew what she did, she hated having to keep the secret. She wasn't a goody two-shoes, but she didn't like lying, she never had.
Willa chuckled softly at the boys comment. Oh of course your crazy, she said teasingly. Most people would agree with her little comment, no body went into the lake anymore its just how things were now, but Willa would still come here and sit by the water, she would even reach her feet into the cool water on occasion, but no further than that. Sometimes, even though she knew it was impossible, Willa thought that the body of the boy would try and drag her under if she went any further. It's my pleasure, she replied, glad he had distracted her from the image that had flown into her head of her being dragged under the water by a corpse that wasn't even there anymore.

TAKE A BREATH TAKE IT DEEP CALM YOURSELF HE SAYS TO ME The way the girl was studying him was making him uncomfortable. He let his eyes wander from looking at her, to looking around the area they were in, until he let them become fixed on the ground. He wondered if she was one of the humans who actually knew what was going on around here. A part of him wished she did, so he could be himself for the first time in a long time. Sad October Pierce annoyed him. But he was always sad when he had to lie, he hated it. He wanted to be able to spill her heart out, to be happy Phoenix Pierce again. He missed himself. Before he had died, he didn't even know that was possible. But now, he wasn't the same person as he used to be. And he missed the old him so much.
He knew he was selfish to want her to know though. The humans that knew about the creatures on this island had to be extremely careful. They had strange creatures after them, wanting to kill them because they knew exactly what they were. They had to live with the fear that the person they are walking past is a vampire or a ghost. Making friends would be difficult. They would always be suspicious of the people on the island. It was better for her not to know. She probably didn't anyway. The only humans that knew were either people who were related to the creatures, or people who had been attacked by them. He really hoped she had never had to experience either one of those things.
"I guess I am." He replied with a small smile. He really shouldn't have come here today, he should have guessed someone would find him. Not everyone would be afraid of the river where he died. But it made him feel so much more human, so alive. It was where he really was himself. If only they had left his body there. Then it would have been even better. "Mine as well." He said, realizing that she hadn't said her name. He didn't ask for it, maybe she had just forgotten. It was odd though. Usually one would give their name after someone introduced themself.
